Whiskey In The Jar

Good songs stand the test of time.

At nearly 400 years old, “Whiskey In The Jar” is one of those songs. The traditional Irish song has been sung to many a waving pint of Guinness and was even recorded by Metallica on the band’s 1998 album, Garage, Inc. Those that have recorded the song include: Jerry Garcia (video below), The Dubliners (video below), Simple Minds (video below) and Peter, Paul & Mary.

  1. For whatever reason, I love Metallica’s version of this song. It seems to capture the spirit of the song in a really, really weird way.

I was surprised by the Garcia version, as well.

  2. I completely agree with you. And, at the risk of rock and roll blasphemy, I like Metallica’s version of “Turn the Page” more than Seger’s. To me, the Metallica version truly conveys the angst of that masterpiece of a song (which is ALL Seger).

  3. Ha! I like their version of that song, as well. I’m not a big Metallica fan in general. I really only know their Black album, the Seger song, and this song.

Did you ever see the documentary…..I think it was called Paradise Lost? It was about these murders that took place in Arkansas. Anyway, the filmmakers used a couple of Metallica songs as the music for that documentary, and it was so very creepy.
