“Hallowed Ground” is a regular feature on Clore Chronicles, exploring important physical locations in music history.
Some venues are important for multiple reasons and events. Others could have opened for a single event, closed the following day, and instantly achieved greatness.
The Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina falls to the latter.
It had the privilege of hosting the final show for Lynyrd Skynyrd’s original line-up on Wednesday, October 19, 1977. Later that evening, a fateful plane crash occurred en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Three of the band’s original line-up died that night: Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines.
Unfortunately, the venue was demolished on September 20, 1997.
